         1. Internalizing the Spirit of “Talent Cultivating” and Building a Pattern of “Three Priorities of Education”

In order to thoroughly implement the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the National Conference on Ideological and Political Work at Universities, the School will promote the all-round development and ideological and political education of students, continuously improve the quality talent cultivation. In addition, it will carry out effective talent cultivation through both teaching and management services so as to build a pattern of educating people in all-round respects by all members of School of International Studies through the whole learning process (referred to as “three priorities of education”). SIS Party Committee’s Plan on Strengthening and Improving “Three Priorities of Education” was formulated and implemented in accordance with the spirit of the Party Central Committee and ZJU documents, as well as with the realities of SIS.

Based on the KAQ2.0 model of talent cultivation and centering on an interdisciplinary foreign-language talent cultivation program, this plan features a student-centered, teacher-led pattern of ideological and political development, which pays attention to imparting knowledge, skills training, professional competence and humanistic qualities, and the coordinated development of IQ and EQ. The main tasks of this plan include three aspects: developing a well-equipped and competent work team to enhance education by all community members; cultivating students’ capabilities in an all-round way with particular emphasis on moral education and talent cultivation; respecting of students’ development and following through the concept of talent cultivation.

    2. Establishing EQ Center to Explore EQ Improvement and Character Shaping

SIS's ideological and political work also focuses on the moral education and talent cultivation goals of Zhejiang University. Proceeding from realities and open to all students, SIS established the ZJU Emotional Intelligence Development and Research Center (EQ Center) in November 2014, thanks to its cooperation with the Party Committee and Students’ Work Office. The EQ Center functions as a curriculum platform, a research platform and a cooperation platform. Meanwhile, an EQ Counselor Studio has been set up to develop EQ courses and theories, as well as to conduct EQ improvement training for all students.

The EQ courses consist of three categories, namely basic courses, development training and public practice. Having integrated various experiential lecturing modes such as ideological and political education and group counseling, the courses boast novel methods, scientific and practical approaches, as well as growth benefits, and have been warmly welcomed and applauded by students. The EQ Center has already completed seven course programs so far. Its EQ courses have also welcomes the first classes for undergraduates and postgraduates. For example, “Emotional Intelligence Management” is included in the training scheme of Global Engagement Program at SIS, while “Emotional Intelligence Science: Theories and Practice” is listed among postgraduates’ public quality courses.

Guided by the KAQ2.0 talent cultivating model, the EQ Center explores a new method of character shaping, which integrates college students’ character shaping with EQ education, and enables team members to learn existing international EQ theories and to actively conduct localized research. By combining teaching with learning, both teachers and students have gained benefits and achieved progress. The EQ Center also aims to improve the expertise and professional level of counselors, and strives to build an ideological and political education team with strong research ability and excellent teaching competence.

3. Deepening Employment Guidance and Serving National Strategies

Students are encouraged to work in the western region or to participate in the selection of prospective cadre program. Each year, by making use of the International Cultural Festival and other platforms, SIS organizes an introductory session on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and invites MFA officials, ambassadors, or working personnel of international organizations to deliver lectures. In addition, SIS has also established a training and practice base of the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) with Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, which allows students to visit key national units such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce, the United Nations Association of China and the peacekeeping forces, thereby enhancing their sense of mission and inspiring them to work in places where they are most needed. Efforts are made to build various international internship and practice platforms, which helps foreign language students to dedicate themselves to the diplomatic cause.
